Omtrentleg utbreiing av Skytia innanfor området til dei austiranske språka vist i oransje, i det 1. hundreåret f.Kr.


I antikken var Skytia (gresk Σκυθία) området i Eurasia folkesett av skytarane, frå det 8. hundreåret f.Kr. til det 2. hundreåret e.Kr. Plassering og omfang varierte over tid, men var vanlegvis strekt lenger mot vest enn det som er vist i kartskissa til høgre.[1] Det som dei klassiske forfattarane tok med i Skytia var:



  • Den pontisk-kaspiske steppa: Kasakhstan, sørlege Russland og Ukraina, frå minst det 8. hundreåret f.Kr.

  • Den nordlege Kaukasus-området, inkludert Georgia og moderne Aserbajdsjan.


  • Sarmatia, tilsvarande det moderne Ukraina og delar av Kviterussland og Polen[2]


  • Litle-Skytia, som svarar til det sørlege Ukraina med nedre Donau-området og ein del av det moderne Romania, tidlegare bulgarsk territorium.

Saka, indo-skytarar, utvida til Sistan og Indus-dalen frå det 1. hundreåret f.Kr.
